Project Description

STRUCTURAL CHALLENGES

  • New construction next to existing operation building with sensitive equipment
  • Stringent vibration requirements
  • Building Design Criteria client-driven changes during construction

EDS provided structural engineering design for a new two-story vivarium facility that utilized a select agent which required BSL-2 and ABSL-2 containment per CDC and NIH. The structural design challenges included future expansion provisions, stringent floor structural vibration criterion for labs, and elevated knock-out wall panels, among others. The designed spaces provided for a laboratory facility suitable for relative potency testing, shell space for future fit-out, accommodation for inoculated animals, and met requirements to obtain CDC registration for the facility and authorization to handle select agents in the facility.
